CMHC’s EQuilibrium™ SUSTAINABLE HOUSING DEMONSTRATION INITIATIVE

EQuilibrium™ is a national sustainable housing demonstration initiative, created and led by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), that brings the private and public sectors together to develop homes, and eventually communities that are a model for sustainable living. EQuilibrium™ homes are designed to address occupant health and comfort, energy efficiency and renewable energy production, resource conservation, reduced environmental impact and affordability.
EQuilibrium™ housing features passive solar design with a super-insulated high performance building envelope and on-site renewable energy systems. Photovoltaic panels on the house generate electricity. Other renewable energy systems, such as solar hot water and geothermal energy systems, can also be used to produce reliable, environmentally friendly energy.
The result is a highly energy- and resource-efficient grid connected home with low environmental impact that aims to produce as much energy each year as it consumes in the form of heat, light and power.
This presentation will explore the characteristics of the six built EQuilibrium™ demonstration projects to date across Canada, as well provide updates from two additional projects currently under construction in Quebec :
- Abondance le Soleil project is a highly energy — and resource-efficient triplex being built on an empty lot in Verdun, Quebec, just south of downtown Montreal.
- The ÉcoTerra™ project in Eastman, Québec, uses renewable energy techniques and technologies to create a single family home that is energy-efficient to operate.
- The Alstonvale Net Zero House is a single-family detached house in the village of Hudson, Quebec, offering a net-zero energy lifestyle — net-zero energy home, transportation and food!
- Avalon Discovery 3 is a grid-tied, solar-powered single family home in Red Deer Alberta, designed to produce as much energy each year as it consumes on an annual basis.
- Inspiration — the Minto ecohome is an innovative, energy-efficient single family home in the village of Manotick, a picturesque community in the south-end of Ottawa, Ontario.
- The Now House™ is a 60-year-old wartime house in an established neighbourhood in Toronto, Ontario. The house was retrofitted with the latest healthy, energy-efficient and sustainable features and technologies.
- The Riverdale NetZero Project is a highly energy-efficient, and healthy duplex located in the downtown residential core of Edmonton, Alberta.
- The Canadian Housing Energy Sustainable Solutions (CHESS) project is a highly resource- and energy-efficient bungalow located in the town of Red Deer, and tailored to the unique climate extremes of central Alberta.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY: AT THE CORE OF SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
Speaker: André Bourassa, president of the Ordre des architectes du Québec
Topics:
- Certification programs for bulidings ;

- The importance of energy efficiency and the Quebec “case”
- The integrated design based on an analysis of life cycles: a winning approach;
- Hydro-Québec’s global plan on energy efficiency;
- The Appuis aux initiatives program – energy optimisation Eloquent examples: Nissan (Sorel-Tracy), Résidences Vivaldi (Oka), Centre premier Tech (Rivière-du-Loup), Gaudreau Environnement, etc.
LOOKING PAST SINGLE IMPACT CERTIFICATIONS
Speaker: Tim Cole – Director of Environmental Initiatives and Product Development / Forbo Flooring Systems North America.
Third-party certification verifies that a product meets specific standards or claims made by the manufacturer. A major benefit of certification is that it can greatly reduce the time and expense required to identify, select and purchase products. A variety of "green" certifications have been created but most focus on a single attribute of a product. A product may be low in VOCs, but not have a single percent of recycled content. A product may be energy efficient, but to make it, the manufacturer is spewing 100 times more carbon emissions than necessary into the atmosphere. This presentation will take a look at single-impact certifications and provide tips on how to understand what part of sustainability they deliver. The presenter also will review the SMARTC Consensus Sustainable Product Standards and how it looks at more than one product attribute at a time.

INNOVATIVE RECLAIM AND SALVAGE SYSTEM ON A NEIGHBOURHOOD AND CITY-WIDE SCALE

Matériaux pour les arts Montréal (MAM) is non-profit organization with a 4R mission that facilitates access to discarded industrial and surplus materials as well as equipment to artists and organizations for their creative endeavours. This measure thus lessens the volume of waste to be transported and buried in local waste management facilities.
MAM’s mission is to develop an innovative reclaim and salvage system on a neighbourhood and city-wide scale. MAM also wishes to become a facilitator and promoter for artistic and cultural projects that encourage re-use. We consider that the creative sector offers a valuable opportunity to find and develop original ways to recycle discarded material.
A unique internet site was created in 2008 in order to meet the demand: la Banque interactive MAM (BIMAM). This tool now serves as a virtual material warehouse and allows industries, commerce and institutions (ICI) to offer materials to the educational art sector and artists that are part of a non-profit working in the arts in Montreal. The site can be viewed by all but access to materials is reserved to eligible beneficiaries.
Matériaux pour les arts Montréal benefits from the financial and partnership contributions from Alcoa, la Conférence régionale des élus (CRÉ), le Centre de Transfert Technologique en Écologie Industrielle (CTTEI), Recyc-Québec and the SIDIM.
Speaker: Virginie Zingraff – Président of the Board
Virginie holds a masters degree in land set-up and environmental sciences. She has worked on issues relating to ecological management of natural habitat and as a scientific writer for Environment Canada. She has since extended her field of expertise to include sustainable development including urban social and cultural preoccupations. She presently works at the Conférence régionale des élus de Montréal, namely on projects relating to the environment and urban landscape and design in collaboration with several political, public, private and community institutions operating in Montreal.

LEED® Canada for Homes
Green homes sell. With all the myths surrounding the topic, there is a need to outline what defines healthier and more efficient homes with reduced environmental footprints. LEED Canada for Homes is a rating system that allows us to weight the different categories . This building accreditation system that has gained international recognition offers tools for builders, architects and designers that wish to integrate green know-how into their projects. The talk will cover green building practices and technologies and how they are applied on the ground. Whether doing renovation or new building with fixed budgets, it becomes essential to focus on cost-effective solutions that generate environmental benefits. Last but not least, projects need to to develop effective marketing strategies in order to get proper market recognition that green homes deserve.
